This is a brief overview of the most common Amiga setups an Amiga Emulator can be setup as to run most Amiga games, Demos and productivity software.

Contents

A500

The original A500 is the most common Amiga system for running Amiga games. Most games that were not designed specifically for the later A1200 will run using this setup. If a game has AGA in the title then it will need the A1200 setup. Otherwise most will run using this A500 setup.

Settings to use in the emulator:

Additional options (set these if your emulator includes them)

  • Match A500 speed
  • More Compatible
  • No FPU

A500+/A600

The A500+ and A600 share very similar hardware so the settings will be nearly the same. Most games only need the standard A500 settings already shown above. However some may need the newer settings of these machines. If you see a game mentioned as being ECS then you will need to use this setup.

Settings to use in the emulator:

  • Kickstart 2.04 (A500+) or 2.05 (A600)
  • 1MB Chip Ram
  • No Fast Ram
  • 68000 Processor
  • ECS Chipset

Additional options (set these if your emulator includes them)

  • Match A500 speed
  • More Compatible
  • No FPU

A1200

The A1200 was a more advanced Amiga than the A500 and A500+ models shown above. It uses a newer custom chipset known as AGA, which provides more colours on screen in games and a more advanced Workbench Operating system. Games marked as being AGA will need to be run using an A1200 setup.

It is also worth noting that because the A1200 has more physical Chip ram as standard and the newer AGA chipset that many older Amiga games originally written for the A500 will not run on this setup. If a game refuses to load when trying this setup try the A500 setup instead.

Settings to use in the emulator:

  • Kickstart 3.0 (earlier A1200's) or 3.1 (later A1200's) (either rom should work)
  • 2MB Chip Ram
  • No Fast Ram
  • 68020 Processor
  • AGA Chipset

Additional options (set these if your emulator includes them)

  • CPU Emulation Speed = Fastest possible, but maintain chipset timing
  • More Compatible
  • No FPU

With the A1200 setup you may still find some AGA games won't work. If you discover this try adding 4MB Fast ram to the setup and then try loading the game again.

Other Amiga models

There were many other Amigas released over the years, but the setups listed above give details needed to get most Amiga games working. If you wish to emulate other models of Amiga have a look at the Amiga models table and copy the hardware settings from the table into your emulators settings and you should be able to accurately emulate that model.
