Custom Upgrades

  • RAM Expansions
The most common expansion for the A500 was the A501 expansion, giving the Amiga 500 a total of 1MB ::RAM (usually 0.5MB CHIP RAM and 0.5MB FAST RAM) ... this fitted into the trapdoor slot underneat the ::A500 and beacuase it required no opening of the Amiga, it didn't void the warrenty.
Later versions of the A501 and similar expansions came with a battery backed up clock.
The A501 was NOT compatible with the Amiga 500+ but many alternatives were made by third parties.
  • Accelerators

Other Upgrades

Also usable on the A500 is most Amiga hardware that can be connected via the RBG Video, Joystick, Floppy drive, Parallel or serial ports of the Amiga as the A1000 shares exactly the same ports as all other models of Amiga. These ports were often used to connect external floppy disk drives, sound samplers, video digitisers, scanners, midi devices, printers... etc.
